My Flag Presented by President Taft

Illustration from Website noted to right of 1899 Presidential flag and history
Original Presidential Flag (shown to left at top) presented by President William Howard Taft at dedication of church as well as all documentation and newspaper clippings and photographs.
Note: President's Flag or Standard (Navy), 1899.  Sometime between 1885 and 1899, without changing the official description ("a blue ground with the arms of the United States"), the Navy's Presidential flag was altered--at least in printed representations--to use a full color representation of the coat of arms as shown on the new die of the Great Seal of the United States, manufactured by Tiffany and Company for the Department of State in 1885.   The President's flag was also lengthened to a new proportion of 10.2 by 16 feet by the time the 1899 edition of Flags of Maritime Nations was published.  This flag was adopted for certain uses by the Army in 1901.  Flag on bottom left on website:  http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeohzt4/Seaflags/personal/

Miniature Sterling Silver Presentation Piece given to honored guests at the Official Ceremony where President William Howard Taft turned over the first shovelful of dirt at the future site of the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition / World's Fair.  The original, full size, Sterling Silver Ceremonial Shovel was made by Shreeve & Co. of San Francisco and this miniature Shovel appears to be an exact replica of that Shovel. On the blade of this tiny masterpiece is text that reads “Used By William Howard Taft, President of the United States October 14, 1911 in Turning the First Spadeful of Earth for the Panama Pacific International Exposition to be Held in San Francisco 1915.”. At the junction of the shaft of the Shovel and the Blade is a very elaborate monogram which includes the letters “PPIE” (for Panama Pacific International Exposition) and on the handle is the crest of the City of San Francisco - Phoenix bird arising from a ring of fire, and the motto "Oro en Paz, Fierro en Guerra" (Gold in Peace, Iron in War). The back of the shaft is marked with the touchmark of Shreeve & Co. of San Francisco as well as “Sterling“ and “Pat. Appd For”. This beautiful and VERY rare Sterling Silver Shovel measures approx. 4” long and 3/4” across the face of the blade.     $100
